TVA Employees to Participate in National Day of Caring

September 9, 2003

On the National Day of Caring, Sept. 11, Knoxville-area TVA employees will hold a food and clothing drive and volunteer their time and skills working at local nonprofit United Way agencies that benefit from Combined Federal Campaign contributions.

The food and clothing drive will be held on the plaza between the TVA towers from 7 a.m. - 10 a. m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. Clothing is being collected for boys and girls in local group homes between the ages of 10 and 18 and for low-income women who need professional attire.

The clothing will be distributed by two nonprofit organizations, Child and Family Services and Career Closet. The food is being collected for the Salvation Army.

The Tanasi Girl Scout Camp in Andersonville has been chosen as a TVA Day of Caring site. TVA employees will help with a variety of work chores, including painting the exterior buildings on the campsite. TVA employees at Kingston Fossil Plant will volunteer their time at Pathways Community Center on Sept. 11 and at Henry Center in Harriman on Sept. 10.

In remembrance of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, many TVA employees plan to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., as encouraged by a presidential proclamation.

The Combined Federal Campaign is held annually to give federal employees an opportunity to contribute to charitable organizations. More than 1,787 charitable, health, and human services agencies serving people nationally and locally are eligible to receive CFC funds.

“TVA employees generously support local charitable agencies through their contributions to the Combined Federal Campaign,” said LeAnne Stribley, TVA executive vice president of administration and chair of TVA’s Smoky Mountain Region CFC. “The hands-on, physical help and time that we provide on the Day of Caring bridge the gap to help local organizations that need more than monetary assistance to provide their services.”

TVA is the nation’s largest public power producer is completely self-financed. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve 8.3 million consumers in seven southeastern states.
