Supreme Court Rules on District Gun Case

The United States Supreme Court has ruled in District of Columbia v. Heller, a case challenging the District’s ban on handguns in homes. The Court found the ban unconstitutional, but it will remain in effect until the Metropolitan Police Department issues regulations on the registration of handguns in the next few weeks.

Although District residents will soon be permitted to register handguns, laws against automatic weapons and carrying firearms in public will remain in effect. Read more.


Key to the City for Ovechkin

Mayor Adrian Fenty and Council Chairman Vincent Gray presented a key to the city to Washington Capitals’ left wing Alex Ovechkin, who was awarded the Hart Trophy, the National Hockey League’s MVP award, in Toronto. Ovechkin is the first major-league District athlete to win an MVP award in 25 years. Read more.


New Action on Nuisance Properties

Mayor Fenty, Interim Attorney General Peter Nickles, DCRA Director Linda Argo and councilmembers announced new initiatives to crack down on owners of nuisance rental property in the District. The announcement took place at a 13-unit building in Southeast that is home to more than 100 housing code violations. Read more.


District Kicks Off Summer Fun 2008

Mayor Fenty and young people from across the District kicked off the “DC Summer Fun 2008” program. With more than 150 programs, DC Summer Fun is designed to provide the District’s youth with activities to keep them engaged in the summer. Read more.


Summer Jobs for 18,000 Youth

Mayor Fenty greeted youth at the Walter Washington Convention Center to kick off the 2008 Summer Youth Program. The program began with more than 18,000 registrants, the largest number of young people registered since the 1980s.

Mayor Fenty has committed to continue to increase the program until every young person in the city who wants to work has a summer job. Read more.


Fun Family Films Under the Stars

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting “Fun Family Films Under the Stars” through September at locations throughout the District. Movies will be family-friendly and run from 8:45-11 pm, and you can bring snacks, chairs and blankets. Read more.


Financing for New O Street Market

Mayor Fenty announced a $35-million tax increment financing package to redevelop the historic O Street Market in Shaw. The site will include 630 units of housing, including 80 affordable units for seniors, a hotel, garage and retail space that will include a new Giant grocery store. Read more.


New DC Quarter: Ellington Wins!

With 36 percent of more than 6,000 votes cast, musician Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington is the District’s choice for the back of its new quarter coin. Voters chose Ellington over Frederick Douglass and Benjamin Banneker. Read more.
