How to Use this Site

Thank you for visiting Disability.gov! Below are a few tips that will make it easier for you to use the site.

Disability.gov is an online resource designed to provide people with disabilities, their family members, employers, service providers, educators and others with quick and easy access to the information they need. The site offers a number of ways to find this information, including:

  • Search & Advanced Search
  • Information by Topic
  • Information by State
  • "I want to"
  • Site Map

Search & Advanced Search

Type a word or phrase into the Search box on the top left hand side of any page on Disability.gov and click the "Search" button to the right of the box to find results on that topic.

The Advanced Search option, which you can use by clicking the word "Advanced" located to the left of the Search box, allows you to search by topic, audience and state. The search results can be arranged alphabetically or by popularity, and with or without their link description.

Information by Topic

The information on this site is divided among ten topic areas listed below. These can be accessed by clicking on the list of topics on the left hand side of any Disability.gov page. Topic areas include:

  • Benefits
  • Civil Rights
  • Community Life
  • Education
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Technology
  • Transportation

Each of these main topic areas is further divided into subfolders to help you find more detailed information. For example, if you are a person with a disability looking for a job, you might wish to go to the Employment section of the site, and then click on the "Jobs & Career Planning" subfolder.

We invite you to explore all of the main topic areas and subfolders to find information that interests you.

Information by State

The "Information by State" option located on the left hand side of any page allows you to choose a state from the drop down menu to find state and local information and resources. Once you have selected your state, you can further refine your search by choosing the topic areas (such as Education, Employment, etc.) of interest to you.

I want to...

On Disability.gov's home page, you will find the "I want to" section, which allows you to locate information based on a particular action, for example "Find a job" or "Apply for scholarships." There are ten "I want to" actions on the home page that cover the most frequently asked about topics. If you click on "More Options" at the bottom right of the "I want to" section, you will find additional choices.

Site Map

Click the "Site Map" link located at the bottom left hand corner of any page on Disability.gov for a complete list of folders and subfolders on the site. You can click any link on the list to be taken to that page on the site.

Other Features

Stay Connected

In the "Stay Connected" box on the Disability.gov home page, you will find several tools that will help you receive information about what's new on the site. You can sign up to receive email updates on news and events and new resources added to Disability.gov and subscribe to the Disability.gov Connection, the quarterly newsletter for Disability.gov. You can also find out about the RSS feeds Disability.gov offers. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and is a way of receiving a list of new content that has been added to Disability.gov. In addition, you can choose to "bookmark and share" a link to Disability.gov, so that you can either save Disability.gov as one of your favorite links on your computer, or share it with others.

Suggest A Resource

Share your recommendations for new links and resources to be added to Disability.gov by clicking "Suggest A Resource" on the Disability.gov home page. You will be taken to a page where you can enter the link address/URL, link title and link description for the new information you would like to see added to the site. Please make sure to read the "Link Policy" at the top of the page before submitting a request to add a new link.

Link to Us

You can add a link to Disability.gov to your Web site by clicking "Link to Us" on the right hand side of the Disability.gov home page.

Read our Blog

Disability.gov's blog provides information on topics of interest to our users. Check back frequently to see what new information has been added. You can read the current blog entry, view past blogs and post comments or questions.

Follow Us on Twitter

Disability.gov regularly provides updates about new information and resources added to the site, and other important changes or news using the social networking Web site Twitter. If you are a Twitter user, you can sign up to follow Disability.gov so you will receive these regular updates. Visit www.twitter.com for further information.

News & Events

The News and Events tabs at the bottom of the Disability.gov home page offer information about breaking news related to disability matters and upcoming disability-related events. Click "More News" at the bottom of the News tab to find additional news items, or "More Events" at the bottom of the Events tab for information on additional upcoming events.

Text Size

On the top right-hand side of any page on Disability.gov there is a Text Size feature that allows the user to select the text size they prefer on the site.

The three buttons with the letter "A" in them next to the "Text Size" option range in size from small to large, going from left to right. The first "A" button next to "Text Size" is small text, the next is medium size text and the final button is the largest text available on the site. Simply click the button of the letter size that you prefer to change the text size on Disability.gov

High Contrast

Located at the top of each page on Disability.gov is a drop down menu that allows the user to switch the site from "Full Graphics" to "High Contrast" in order to more easily tell the difference between background images and text.

If you would like to use the High Contract version of the site, simply select "High Contrast" from the drop down menu at the top right of any home page and click the "SET" button to the right to the drop down menu.
