DOT Announces $1.2 Billion in Federal Recovery Act Funds for Transit Improvements Throughout U.S.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced that grants totaling $1.2 billion in Recovery Act funds will go to improve state and local transit systems in the United States while supporting the creation of jobs and providing much needed transportation options for millions. Many of these grants will pay for paratransit services and accessible public transportation in communities around the country.

Request for Public Comments on Survey of Over-the-Road Bus (OTRB) Companies

Department of Transportation is requesting comments on OTRB companies to determine the accessibility of transportation for people with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Comments must be received by August 31, 2009. This link opens a PDF document.

National Summit on Disability Policy 2010

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is seeking people with disabilities, individuals representing grassroots organizations and others to help shape disability policies and programs for the next decade. Deadline for submitting application to attend the summit is October 15, 2009.

HHS Rescinds Medicaid Regulations
Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced that the administration will rescind all or part of three Medicaid regulations that were previously issued and delay the enforcement of a fourth regulation. One of these rules would have eliminated reimbursement for school-based administrative costs and costs of transportation to and from schools.

New resource for secondary school educators from Easter Seals Project ACTION includes a booklet, slide shows, questionnaire and links to additional information to support young adults' needs for public transportation through travel training.

Job Access & Reverse Commute Program
The Federal Transit Administration funds transportation projects to help low-income individuals where existing transit is either unavailable, inappropriate or insufficient.
New Freedom Program
The Federal Transit Administration has provided the New Freedom Grant Program to provide additional tools for people with disabilities to integrate into the workplace.
