This course was offered June 15 - July 13, 2009 and provided an overview of customized employment, a process for individualizing the employment relationship between a job seeker and an employer in ways that meet the needs of both.

DOJ Files Lawsuit Alleging Disability-based Housing Discrimination at Six Complexes in Sioux Falls

The Justice Department (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against Equity Homes Inc., PBR LLC, BBR LLC and Shane Hartung in U.S. District Court in South Dakota for failing to provide accessible features required by the Fair Housing Act at multi-family housing developments in Sioux Falls.

DOJ Sues Nobel Learning Communities Inc. for Discrimination Against Children with Disabilities
The Justice Department (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against Nobel Learning Communities Inc. (Nobel) in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia alleging the company violated Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act by excluding children with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities from its schools and programs in several states.

Nationwide Program to Help Older Americans & Veterans with Disabilities Remain Independent in the Community

$10 million in funding is being made available to implement the Veteran Directed Home & Community Based Service (VDHCBS) program through HHS's aging and human services network, in coordination with the Administration on Aging's (AoA) Community Living Program (CLP). Both programs allow participants to direct their own care and include the option of hiring their neighbors, friends and even some family members, to provide needed services.

New Report Addresses Asset Development & the Workforce System

May 2009 report from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) entitled Creating a Roadmap out of Poverty for Americans with Disabilities focuses on three cities: Detroit, Jacksonville and Milwaukee, and the tie-in between the workforce development system and advancing the economic independence of individuals with disabilities. The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 & the ADA

President Obama recently signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Funds are being distributed by federal agencies to states and communities throughout the country to build, repair and upgrade a wide range of facilities, systems and programs. The Department of Justice is taking this opportunity to remind state and local government officials, business owners and building professionals of their obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

What Can You Do? Video Contest

The Campaign for Disability Employment, a collaborative of leading disability organizations funded by the Office of Disability Employment Policy of the U.S. Department of Labor, held an online video contest to promote the talent and skills that people with disabilities bring to America's workforce and economy. The contest was held from June 8, 2009 - July 15, 2009.
