Study Seeks Participants with Sensory and/or Mobility Impairments

If you have a sensory and/or mobility impairment you may be eligible to participate in a new research project of the Washington University School of Medicine's Program in Occupational Therapy. This research aims to understand what people with sensory and/or mobility impairments do in their daily lives, how their environments affect their community participation and what, if any, help they need to complete activities.

Special Olympics Mourns the Loss of Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Eunice Kennedy Shriver died on August 11, 2009 in Hyannis, Massachusetts, surrounded by her family. Shriver was the founder and honorary chairperson of Special Olympics. She had been a leader in the worldwide movement to improve and enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities for more than six decades. Arc 2009 National Convention

This year's annual Arc convention provides information on practices and innovation on services, supports and research for people with disabilities. The convention will be held November 11-14 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Disability.gov Offers New Social Media Tools on Redesigned Site
In conjunction with the 19th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the U.S. Department of Labor has re-named and re-launched DisabilityInfo.gov as Disability.gov. The site now offers comprehensive information about programs and services to better serve the more than 50 million Americans with disabilities, their family members, veterans, employers, educators, caregivers and anyone interested in disability-related information.
Emergency Management with Special Populations Certificate Program

Temple University is offering online classes to help the public health workforce and emergency managers to address the needs of special populations, including people with disabilities and older Americans.

On July 30, 2009 the United States became one of 142 other countries that have signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

2010 VSA arts International Young Soloists Award Call for Entries

This award is given annually to four outstanding musicians, two from the United States and two from the international arena. The award provides an opportunity for musicians to each earn a $5,000 award and a performance in Washington, D.C. Application deadline is November 16, 2009. TASH 2009 Conference

This conference focuses on the issues and trends relating to people who have significant disabilities and their families. Topics include inclusive education, positive behavior supports, equal employment opportunities, health and wellness and more. This event will be held on November 17-21, 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA. Pacific Rim International Conference on Disabilities

This conference is organized into three thematic areas--Foundation, Exploration and Innovation, and will address many issue areas including employment, hidden disabilities, transition to post-secondary education, disability rights, assistive technology and more. Deadline for submitting proposals is December 18, 2009. The conference will be held April 12-13, 2010 in Honolulu, HI and online registration is available.
