CDOT BEGINS AMERICAN RECOVERY & REINVESTMENT ACT (ARRA) FUNDED PROJECT ON US 24/US 285 IN CHAFFEE COUNTY

CHAFFEE COUNTY -- The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins an American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) project on Monday, August 10. This project, in CDOT's Region 5 (southwest/south-central Colorado) will resurface a 12.5-mile section of US 24/US 285, from just west of Johnson Village (at mile point 212.9) northeast to mile point 225.58. Work involves a pavement leveling and a 2" asphalt overlay on US 24/US 285, as well as new guardrail installation and adjustments to existing guardrail.

The project was programmed to receive ARRA funding in the amount of $5.7 million. It has actually received $5.2 million, as $500,000 was returned to CDOT's Region 5 ARRA pool for future ARRA projects, due to contractor bid savings.

The project was awarded to low-bidder Asphalt Paving Contractors (APC) of Golden for $2.2 million; the total project cost1 is $5.2 million. Because of these bid savings, an additional $876,000 will be added to APC's contract to extend the paving for an additional four miles on the east end (to mile point 225.58), as specified in the contractor bid process for this project.

"We're happy to see this much-needed resurfacing project get underway here," Chaffee County Commissioner Frank Holman said. "And when people are put to work anywhere in the state, it's a good thing."

For information on this project, the public may call (800) 798-6611. For information on other CDOT projects statewide, the public may log on to www.cotrip.org or call 511. Thank you for going Slow for the Cone Zone!

In all, Colorado will receive more than $400 million for transportation projects and $103 million for transit projects statewide. For a list of CDOT's Recovery Act projects and additional ARRA information, visit www.dot.state.co.us/arra.
