Final Rulemaking Proposed for Taxicab System Changes

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty today announced a series of proposed and emergency rules for the District’s upcoming switch to metered taxicabs.

“These last adjustments to our meter plan will make sure we’re ready to go on April 6,” said Mayor Fenty. “We’ve listened to all stakeholders, and taken the concerns of the riding public and our hardworking taxi drivers into account. Everyone will know exactly what to expect.”

The proposed rules:

1.    Allow for the immediate installation of meters. The DC Taxicab Commission will begin certifying meters and installers. The District expects 6-10 meter installers to be certified. Installation will take 45 minutes to an hour per taxi.
2.    Adjust the maximum fare by 10 cents. The maximum fare will be $19, instead of the original $18.90, because technical limitations limit meters to 25-cent increments.
3.    Maintain the current additional rider charge. The charge for additional riders will remain $1.50, in line with the current fare structure and that of surrounding jurisdictions.

Public comment on the proposed rules will remain open at least until March 4. Comments may be submitted by email at dctc@dc.gov, or by phone at (202) 645-6018.
