The Case Studies in Environmental Medicine (CSEM) are a series of self-instructional courses designed to increase the primary care provider's knowledge of hazardous substances in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients. Continuing medical education (CME) for physicians, continuing nursing education (CNE) for nurses, continuing education units (CEU) for other professionals, and continuing education contact hours (CECH) for certified health education specialists (CHES) are offered in support of this series.

The state of knowledge regarding the treatment of patients potentially exposed to hazardous substances in the environment is constantly evolving and is often uncertain. In the series, ATSDR has made diligent effort to ensure the accuracy and currency of the information presented, but makes no claim that the case study documents comprehensively address all possible situations related to this substance. The case studies are intended as an additional resource for physicians and other health professionals in assessing the condition and managing the treatment of patients potentially exposed to hazardous substances. They are not, however, a substitute for the professional judgment of a health care provider. The case studies must be interpreted in light of specific information regarding the patient and in conjunction with other sources of authority.
