The 2010 President’s Budget for the Bureau of Labor Statistics

On May 7, 2009, President Obama submitted his 2010 budget to Congress. The President’s Budget provides $611.6 million in funding to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for the 2010 fiscal year that will begin on October 1, 2009.

The 2010 level of funding will enable BLS to continue to fulfill its unique role in developing national labor-related statistics.  It includes funds to develop new series on “green-collar” jobs, addressing the need for detailed data on these rapidly evolving industries and occupations.

2010 Budget Highlight
The 2010 President’s Budget for BLS includes:

  • Measuring Green-Collar Jobs ($8 million).  As the chief source of government data on jobs, BLS will work with other DOL agencies and key organizations, such as the Energy Information Administration, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the National Science Foundation, to define the green economy and then to produce data on green-collar jobs.  This initiative will produce regular quarterly tabulations of aggregate employment and wages for businesses whose primary activities can be defined as green, and produce information on the occupations involved in whole or in part in green economic activity.  These series, the first of which will be published in 2011, will be key to analyzing workforce trends in the green economy.
