Basis for selecting the number of light stations remaining in the U.S.
The listing of light stations was based on stations as opposed to towers. Some towers were never part of a manned station. The list includes any one time manned station of which some structure remains. In a few cases the "classical" tower has been removed, but the dwelling, fog signal house or some other combination of structures remain.
* In the case of a set of range lights the site is considered one station.
* Where two towers remain either as a two tower station (Bakers Island, Cape Ann) or the original and new tower still remain (Cape Romain, Cape Henry) the site is counted as one station.
* However, if the "new" tower is located a considerable distance (Point Loma) then we counted those as separate sites or stations.
* Where the ‘house’ structure of a caisson or screw-pile type structures has been removed the site is not counted.
* Non-federal lighthouses (private aids to navigation) were not counted, nor special towers like the William Livingston Memorial tower in Lake Erie as it was never a manned station.
