Ambassador Garza: “Shared prosperity is the promise NAFTA holds for the people of North America, and close cooperation between state government treasurers in the United States, Mexico, and Canada is one important step towards achieving that goal.”
Mexico City, Mexico, April 27, 2006 – John Manley, a former member of the Canadian Parliament and former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, delivered the keynote address to the Public Finance Speakers’ Breakfast for Mexico’s state treasurers yesterday. The United States government and Mexico’s National Commission for Fiscal Authorities jointly sponsored the event, which is part of a series of meetings held monthly.
“This ongoing series of breakfast meetings is supported by the U.S. Embassy’s Agency for International Development and helps state treasurers from Canada, Mexico and the United States exchange public finance management ideas and strategies,” said Garza. “The state treasurers of Arizona, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Nevada and New Hampshire; the former Finance Minister of New Brunswick, Canada; and officials from Michoacan, Nuevo Leon, Tabasco, and Quintana Roo have participated in this exchange.”
“This series of conferences opens doors for businesspeople and state finance officials, and gives them a forum to discuss ideas. Americans, Mexicans, and Canadians stand to gain when businesses become more competitive and state economies become more resilient by improving their ability to make public financial institutions work better,” added Garza.
