Thomas R. Kane has been the Assistant Director for the Information, Policy, and Public Affairs Division since July 1991. Mr. Kane is responsible for the enhancement of the quality and timeliness of information that Bureau of Prisons management and line staff have at their disposal, and for ensuring effective communications between the Bureau and its constituents.

Mr. Kane began his career with the Bureau in July 1977. He has served as a Senior Research Analyst, Director of Research, Chief of Staff to the Director, and Deputy Assistant Director for Administration. Prior to joining the Bureau, Mr. Kane served as an instructor at the New York State Police Academy from 1975-1976.

Mr. Kane received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany. He has produced numerous professional publications in the fields of corrections, criminology, and psychology. Mr. Kane is a member of the American Correctional Association (ACA) and serves as Chair of the ACA Committee on Legislative Affairs. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Criminal Justice Information Systems Advisory Policy Board, and the District of Columbia Sentencing Commission, as well as a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. Mr. Kane received the Attorney General's Medallion in 1992, and the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service in 1997 and again in September 2006.
