CMS Updates Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment Information for Value-Driven Health Care (8-28-09)

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is committed to making health care more affordable and accessible. As part of this effort, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is making cost and quality data available to all Americans. As a first step in this initiative, on June 1, 2006, Medicare posted information about the payments it made to hospitals in fiscal year 2005 for common elective procedures and other hospital admissions. Similar postings of Medicare payment data followed during the year for Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), Hospital Outpatient Departments, and Physician Services. This information is updated annually.

We are now presenting an update to last year's ASC data. The information is being displayed in the same format as last year, updated with calendar year (CY) 2008 data. The information is categorized by state and county and includes average charge and payment data.

Below you will find nine zipped Microsoft Excel files. The files are large so printing them is not recommended. Please read the footnotes displayed on each table. The footnotes contain important information about the data.

The first three files (the updated files using CY 2008 data) are as follows:

"Commonly Performed Procedures in ASCs" contains charge and Medicare payment data for ASC facility costs for a limited set of services rendered in U.S. states and counties. These particular codes/services are directly related to the types of services which may be rendered during an inpatient hospital stay. Data are aggregated at the county, state and national level.

"Other Commonly Performed Procedures in ASCs" contains similar charge and payment data, but for facility costs related to services of high utilization (versus the inpatient hospital-related services, noted above) as well as preventive benefit services rendered in an ASC. Data are aggregated at the county, state and national level.

Finally, the last file contains a 1-page example of the comprehensive data.

The remaining six files are the same as the last two years, using CY2006 and CY2007 data.
