On June 22, 2006, the South Coast Air Quality Management District conducted a half-day informational briefing on Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.  This emerging clean air technology is the next step forward in the advancement of hybrid electric vehicles.  A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle differs from a standard hybrid vehicle by having an increased-capacity battery pack that can be recharged by plugging it into an electrical outlet when the vehicle is parked.

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle can operate for a longer period on just electricity, relying less on the vehicle’s gasoline engine to recharge the battery.  This reduces fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions.  The AQMD is sponsoring several prototype Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) demonstrations, and has joined the "Plug-in Partners" a national campaign to educate potential fleet users, municipal utilities, and local officials.
