The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) announces the availability of supplemental funds to support the expansion of methamphetamine prevention services and grant activities funded under the Prevention of Methamphetamine Abuse grant announcement in FY 2006.
The purpose of this program is to allow the current 12 Prevention of Methamphetamine Abuse grantees to continue working and building on their previous activities and programs funded in announcement SP-06-005. The impact of methamphetamine abuse reaches far beyond the individual user. Methamphetamine continues to destroy families and communities and places an even greater burden on the economy. To address this problem, grantees will use the supplemental funds to expand their existing prevention efforts to address the problem of methamphetamine abuse and addiction in their local communities. The goal is to intervene effectively to prevent, reduce, and/or delay the use of methamphetamine abuse.
Prevention of Methamphetamine Abuse grants are authorized under Section 519E of the Public Health Service Act, as amended. This announcement addresses Healthy People 2010 focus area 26 (Substance Abuse).
Eligibility for this funding opportunity is limited to the 12 methamphetamine prevention grantee funded under the FY 2006 Prevention of Methamphetamine Abuse RFA. Due to the limited amount of new funding available, supplemental awards are being made to existing grantees that already have the experience and infrastructure needed to maximize the impact of this limited funding. These 12 entities are uniquely qualified to continue to carry out the activities of this grant program because of their past accomplishments in establishing methamphetamine prevention programs in their local communities, developing school-based programs for at-risk children, coordination with law enforcement and community coalitions to educate the public on the dangers of methamphetamine manufacturing and use, developing appropriate responses for drug-endangered children as a result of methamphetamine production and use by adults, and providing data to support the success of their efforts.

It is expected that up to $1.186 million will be available to fund up to 12 methamphetamine prevention supplemental awards in FY 2009. Annual awards are expected to be approximately $98,833 per year in total costs (direct and indirect) for up to one year.
Proposed budgets cannot exceed the allowable amount.
