Definitions:
Persons living in the same house in 1995 and 2000 are those who responded "Yes, this house" to the question "Did this person live in this house or apartment five years ago (on April 1, 1995)?" The category includes not only persons who did not move during the five years, but also those who had moved but by Census Day had returned to their 1995 residence.
Census questions also asked for the state (or foreign country), U.S. county, city or town, and ZIP code of residence on April 1, 1995 for those people who reported that on that date they lived in a different house than their current residence. Residence five years earlier is used in conjunction with location of current residence to determine the extent of residential mobility of the population.
Data were tabulated for persons 5 years old and over, and the percentage shown is derived by dividing the number of persons living in the same house by the total number of persons 5 years old and over.
Scope and Methodology:
These data are collected on the census long form. Roughly one in every six households received this sample questionnaire. The data are estimates and are subject to sampling variability. Information on the accuracy of data and sampling is in Chapter 8 of Summary File 3 documentation.
