Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitive Jon Savarino Schillaci Arrested
by Mexican Authorities
Statement
by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, June 6, 2008 – “Jon Savarino Schillaci, one of
the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation’s top ten most wanted
fugitives and a convicted pedophile, was arrested yesterday
by the Mexican National Institute of Migration and the Michoacan
state Ministerial Police. His apprehension and his transfer
this morning to U.S. custody mean he will now face justice
in the United States.
“Schillaci has been on the run since November 1999, when
he was accused of sexually assaulting the five-year old son
of a couple who befriended him after his release from prison
in July that year. Schillaci had been incarcerated for abusing
two eleven-year old boys nearly ten years before.
“Schillaci is wanted on charges of unlawful flight to avoid
prosecution, aggravated felonious sexual assault, felonious
sexual assault, and 23 counts of child pornography. It is
suspected that he was actively distributing child pornography
while hiding here in Mexico. Clearly, this is a man who should
not be loose on the streets of any city, in any country or
state.
“Once again Mexico has demonstrated that it will not be a
refuge for criminals fleeing from justice.”
