U.S. Fugitive Cesar Laurean Arrested by Mexican Authorities
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, April 10, 2008- “I congratulate the Office of
the Attorney General of the state of Michoacan and the Mexican
Federal Police (SSP), who today arrested Cesar Armando Laurean,
a U.S. Marine who is accused of killing Maria Lauterbach,
a pregnant fellow Marine, in North Carolina last year. Laurean
was arrested at approximately 7:00 pm in San Juan de Vina,
Municipio de Tacambaro, in the State of Michoacan.
“Mexican authorities cooperated closely with the Federal
Bureau of Investigation to track and capture Laurean, who
will be held pending extradition on charges in North Carolina
for murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
“This is a clear message to all would-be fugitives from U.S.
law that Mexico will not provide them refuge. Laurean fled
to Mexico early this year in the hope of avoiding justice.
Despite his attempts to elude apprehension, international
police cooperation and cutting edge technology led law-enforcement
officials to his capture.
“Strong cooperation between Mexican and U.S. authorities
increasingly ensures that those who commit crimes in either
country will ultimately face capture and prosecution no matter
where they might try to hide.”
