Ambassador Garza Promotes Travel to the U.S. at the Expo
Vacaciones Tourism Fair
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, February 12, 2008 - “The United States is the
number one destination for Mexican tourists, with over 13
million Mexicans visiting us in 2006 alone. We hope that number
will continue to grow as more Mexicans choose to vacation
in the U.S.
“Today I visited the Expo Vacaciones travel fair, being held
from February 11-13 in Mexico City. Expo Vacaciones gives
tourism professionals the latest information on travel destinations
in the United States.
“In 2006, spending by visitors to the U.S. directly supported
almost one million American jobs, which highlights the vital
importance of tourism for the United States economy. But tourism
also represents a unique medium for people-to-people exchange,
improving the ties of friendship and common values that exist
between our countries.
“Mexico is an incredibly important market for the U.S. travel
and tourism industry. Mexicans vacation in the U.S. because
of proximity, the abundance of direct flights and top-notch
tourist destinations, the presence of family and many Mexican-American
communities throughout the U.S. and, more generally, the close
commercial and business ties between our countries.
“The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico will soon begin
distributing ‘Discover America’ tourism guides to provide
the latest up-to-date information, in Spanish, on the most
important and exciting destinations in the U.S. -- including
some not so well known to the Mexican tourist. We hope these
guides will be useful to those planning their next trip to
the U.S., and will contribute to the warm and vibrant relationship
between our two countries.”
