Ambassador Garza Congratulates Mexico on Capture of a Top
Sinaloa Cartel Narcotrafficker
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, January 21, 2008 - “Today was a significant
victory for Mexican Armed Forces, Attorney General’s office
and other law enforcement authorities, who detained Alfredo
Beltran Leyva, one of the Sinaloa Cartel’s top drug traffickers,
and three of his cohorts. This arrest demonstrates once again
the ongoing commitment of President Calderon and his administration
to hit the criminal organizations where it hurts.
“Alfredo Beltran Leyva is one of the main leaders of the
Sinaloa Cartel, which transports cocaine and other drugs to
the United States. He is believed to direct the Cartel’s transport
of drugs, laundering of money, and attempts to corrupt public
officials throughout western Mexico.
“The Armed Forces caught with Beltran Leyva dangerous weapons,
including an AK-47, and suitcases containing approximately
$900,000 U.S. dollars, indicating his direct connections to
money laundering and violent criminal activity. He is also
said to direct two groups of assassins working for the Cartel.
“When Mexico takes dangerous criminals like Beltran Leyva
and his crew off the streets, the people of the United States
also benefit. Our continued commitment to working with our
Mexican government and law enforcement partners in the battle
against these criminals is stronger than ever, and together
we will succeed in taking our streets and communities back
for the citizens of both our nations.” |
