Geologist on the rim of Pu`u `O`o cinder and spatter cone; Pu`u `O`o
is located on the east rift zone of Kilauea about 20 km from the
summit caldera. Note low lava fountain along the edge of the lava
pond in the crater and the blue-colored volcanic fume rising from
the pond. This fume contributes to vog on the Island of Hawai`i.
The hazard from the gas is greatest immediately downwind of the
crater, and geologists work upwind as much as possible and wear
gas masks to limit the intake of sulfur dioxide gas.
