"Cooperation between the United States and Mexico in order to enforce the law and protect our citizens has steadily increased," said today U. S. Ambassador Antonio O. Garza, Jr. after signing an agreement for $12 million in funding this year for counter-narcotics projects in Mexico. This amount is in addition to the $25 million provided for border security projects under a Letter of Agreement signed at the Binational Commission last November.
Ambassador Garza noted, that with cooperation at the highest level, "we have expanded our mutual effort to fight drug trafficking, root out corruption, safeguard our borders and provide better security for the citizens of Mexico and the United States."
The annual letter of agreement signed by both governments September 23 provides funding for police training, counter-narcotics and law enforcement infrastructure, demand reduction efforts and support for interdiction and eradication.
