TVA’s Transmission System

TVA owns and operates one of the largest and most reliable transmission systems in North America, serving some nine million residents in an 80,000-square-mile area spanning portions of seven states. TVA’s transmission system moves electric power from the generating plants where it is produced to distributors of TVA power and to industrial and federal customers across the region. In 2007 the TVA system delivered its eighth year in a row of 99.999 percent reliability. (Read more on system facts and key managers.)

TVA provides transmission service on a nondiscriminatory, as-available basis to other qualified power providers requiring power transfers out of or through the TVA system. TVA also provides interconnection services to independent power producers consistent with sound reliability practices.

Using the TVA transmission system

Eligible customers can obtain transmission services from TVA as they are available. TVA offers a variety of options, including long- or short-term firm point-to-point transmission service, non-firm point-to-point transmission service, and network integration transmission service. Connecting to the TVA transmission system

Connecting a new power plant to the TVA system involves a process to ensure that the transmission system is designed, or can be upgraded, to accommodate the plant’s impact on TVA system reliability. Learn more about connecting to the TVA transmission system.

Investments in transmission system help ensure reliable service

Continued investment in the transmission system helps TVA meet the daily challenge of moving power to where it is needed, regardless of weather, time of day, or competing demand.

During fiscal year 2004, improvements to TVA’s transmission system included the construction of 80 miles of new line and 17 new delivery points.
