Slide 1: Percentages of HIV/AIDS Cases and Population among Adolescents 13 to 19 Years of Age, by Race/Ethnicity Diagnosed in 2007—34 States

Black/African American adolescents have been disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In 2007, in the 34 states with long-term confidential name-based HIV infection reporting, 17% of adolescents 13 to 19 years of age were black/African American, yet 72% of HIV/AIDS diagnoses in 13 to 19 year olds were in black/African American adolescents.

Note:
The following 34 states have had laws or regulations requiring confidential name-based HIV infection surveillance since at least 2003: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
The data have been adjusted for reporting delays.
Asian/Pacific Islander legacy cases are cases that were collected under the old race/ethnicity classification system. Asian/Pacific Islander legacy cases are included in the totals for Asians.
Hispanics/Latinos can be of any race.

Slide 2: Percentages of HIV/AIDS Cases and Population among Young Adults 20 to 24 Years of Age, by Race/Ethnicity Diagnosed in 2007—34 States

Black/African American young adults have been disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In 2007, in the 34 states with long-term confidential name-based HIV infection reporting, 16% of young adults 20 to 24 years of age were black/African American, yet 61% of HIV/AIDS diagnoses in 20 to 24 year olds were in blacks/African Americans.

Note:
The following 34 states have had laws or regulations requiring confidential name-based HIV infection surveillance since at least 2003: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Slide 3: Percentages of HIV/AIDS Cases among Adults and Adolescents, by Sex and Age Group Diagnosed in 2007—34 States

The ratio of male to female adolescents and young adults with a diagnosis of HIV infection increases with age at diagnosis. In 2007, females accounted for 31% of adolescents aged 13 to 19 years who were diagnosed with HIV infection, compared with 23% of young adults aged 20 to 24 years and 26% of adults aged 25 years and older.

Note:
The following 34 states have had laws or regulations requiring confidential name-based HIV infection surveillance since at least 2003: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

From 2004 through 2007, the majority of HIV/AIDS cases among adolescent and young adult males were attributed to male-to-male sexual contact.

Slide 8: Reported AIDS Cases among Adolescents 13 to 19 Years of Age, by Sex, 1985–2007—United States and Dependent Areas, N=7,200

From 1985 through 2007, 7,200 adolescents aged 13-19 years were reported with AIDS. In earlier years, most reported cases were in adolescent males; over time, the male-to-female ratio has decreased. In 2007, 541 adolescents were reported with AIDS; of these, 324 (60%) were male and 217 (40%) were female.

Slide 9: Reported AIDS Cases among Young Adults 20 to 24 Years of Age, by Sex, 1985–2007—United States and Dependent Areas, N=38,483

From 1985 through 2007, a total of 38,483 young adults aged 20 to 24 years were reported with AIDS; most were male. In 1985, 89% of cases reported in young adults 20 to 24 years old were in males. However, as high-risk heterosexual contact has accounted for an increasing percentage of HIV infections, particularly in females, the percentage of AIDS cases reported in females has increased. In 2007, 25% of the 1,888 cases reported were in females.
