The Afghanistan Support Office (ASO) was established by Presidential Directive to assist with the accomplishment of foreign policy goals in Afghanistan. It affords a unique opportunity to U.S. citizens to become involved in this important endeavor.
Initial appointments are for a period of 13 months, but the appointment may be terminated earlier based on operational needs, is subject to the availability of funds, and is contingent upon receipt of final ethics, medical and security clearances.
Employees appointed under 5 USC 3161 do not receive civil service tenure and are not eligible to compete for positions limited to those with civil service status.
