Secretary Locke Announces Recovery Act Grants to Arizona, Florida and Georgia

Artist rendering of biopark.U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke announces Economic Development Administration (EDA) grants to the Arizona Board of Regents and the University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz., to the Tampa Port Authority, Tampa, Fla., and Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia, Inc., Augusta, Ga. The projects, made possible because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), are expected to create additional jobs and private investment in the regions.

EDA is an agency within the U.S. Commerce Department and supports the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. Its mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness and preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.

Commerce's NTIA Submits Second Quarterly Status Report to Congress

BTOP logo.The Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) submitted the second quarterly status report on the Broadband Technology and Opportunities Program (BTOP) to Congress on August, 18, 2009.

BTOP was established under the Recovery Act and is a $4.7 billion grant program designed to create jobs and stimulate economic growth through an increase in broadband penetration and adoption in unserved and underserved areas of the United States. (Report)

 

NIST Awards $55.5 Million in Grants for New University Research Facilities

NIST logo.The U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced today that it is awarding grants totaling more than $55.5 million to four universities to provide cost-shared support for the construction of new scientific research facilities.

“These awards mean four major construction projects in these local areas, with the jobs and economic benefits they bring,” U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said, “but even more important, these four projects provide a major boost to scientific research at four respected universities, enhancing innovation, public safety and environmental protection for many, many years to come.”

Stimulus Fund Awards for Habitat Restoration in Oregon

Off-loading derelict fishing gear.NOAA Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco at the fishing port in Newport today announced more than $7 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to restore habitat projects throughout coastal Oregon. 

Three projects were selected in Oregon, including the Newport project, proposed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which received $699,000 to employ off-season commercial fishermen to remove 180 metric tons of derelict crab pots and other fishing gear along the Oregon coast.
