Mayor Declares "Mine That Bird" Day

The Signed Executive Order

Whereas, Mine That Bird, the son of 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, became the ninth gelding to win the Kentucky Derby and just the second in the last 80 years; and

Whereas, Mine That Bird went off at 50-1 odds and was the second-biggest underdog ever to win the Kentucky Derby; and

Whereas, Mine That Bird was purchased for just $9,500 and beat a field that had several horses worth millions; and

Whereas, with jockey Calvin Borel aboard, Mine That Bird pulled away from the pack on a stunningly fast stretch run, winning by almost seven lengths; and

Whereas, Mine That Bird is trained by Bennie Woolley, a trainer with a stable at Sunland Park, New Mexico;

Now, Therefore, I, Martin Chávez, Mayor of the City of Albuquerque, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2009 as;

Mine That Bird Day

in the City Of Albuquerque, and encourage all citizens to help celebrate this outstanding athlete who has made New Mexico proud.
