CCS: General Account Information

How do I request an account?

If your project has already been approved for access, you need to submit an account application. If your project has not yet requested and been approved for access to CCS systems, the principal investigator of the project must complete a new project request. The new project application must be processed and approved before requests for accounts under the project can be processed.

How do I obtain approval for a new project on CCS systems?

Researchers from industry may contact an ORNL researcher to discuss potential collaborations. More information about collaborations is available at http://www.ccs.ornl.gov/ccii.

Researchers from government or educational sites, affiliated with Department of Energy projects, should complete a new project request. The request will be reviewed and the submitter notified of the determination. If the project is approved, all principal investigators of the project must also complete a PI Agreement and fax the agreement to CCS. After this is received, applications for accounts under the project can be processed. Thus, the PI and all other project members can now submit account applications. Note that projects, including LDRDs must be funded prior to submitting the request for a new project on CCS systems.

What rules must I follow?

By applying for a CCS HPC account, you hereby agree to the following policies:

  • CCS HPC Policy. This policy describes corporate and government requirements of computer access. You should read it carefully and print a copy for your records. In addition, there are operational rules for each system that are contained in the web pages for the system.

  • .rhost files or any files containing clear text passwords are NOT allowed!

  • Current contact information must be provided to the CCS. Accounts found with out-of-date contact information will be disabled until current contact information is provided.

  • One requirement of continued operational funding is periodic reporting of results. Each primary investigator will be asked to submit periodic reports on the results obtained. (A URL is the preferred method of reporting, but emails will be accepted).

How are requests for new projects reviewed?

The application is reviewed by a committee, which reviews all project requests from their research area and makes determinations given the available resources. The Affiliation, Project and Justification responses are key factors. Affiliation refers to a specific research area, with established allocations on the CCS machines. Be as specific as possible in listing your research affiliation. Justification should include a description of your science, why it is important, and how your particular work contributes to the project listed.

If you publish any papers including results obtained using the CCS computers, be sure to include appropriate credit line.

How is machine time allocated?

Division of resources is determined by the CCS. Concerns about administration of resource allocations (and decisions relating to special requirements) will be discussed by a committee.

What are the consequences if I go over my allocation?

Projects that are chronically over allocation are subject to usage restrictions (such as limits on the number of jobs, restrictions on time of day, curtailment of allocation, and disabling of accounts).
