The Veterinary Services (VS) Regional offices accomplish the VS mission by overseeing 41 area offices. The area offices have responsibility for animal health programs in the United States and its territories, including ports along the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico. The Mississippi River separates VS Regional offices into Eastern (ER) and Western (WR) regions. The exception is Minnesota which is in the Eastern region. Each regional office is managed by a director and three associate directors, one of whom is responsible for emergency management. The remaining two associate directors manage the area offices. The regions use regional epidemiologists and import/export veterinarians to help manage animal health programs. An administrative officer, with support staff, manages budget, federal and state cooperative agreements, personnel, GIS and information technology for each region. The ER includes 21 area offices with responsibility for 27 states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The WR includes 20 area offices with responsibility for 23 states and the Pacific territories.
