performance, both of which have adverse effects on health and survival. Disruptions in health care, access to clean water, and sanitation are problems in the region.

In Bahrain, WHO reports that viral infections, including gonococcal infection, syphilis, and viral hepatitis, are slightly on the rise. In Iraq, diarrheal diseases, acute respiratory infections, measles, mumps, typhoid fever, and Leishmaniasis increased substantially from 1990 to 2007, and 181 cases of cholera were reported in August 2008. HIV/AIDS and hepatitis remain significant health problems in Iran and Qatar. In localized areas of Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, malaria remains endemic, according to WHO.
