The summary below was provided by the Peace Corps Volunteer and the community administering this project.

Due to the remoteness, the lack of efficient transportation and the lack of money CSCOM and Maternity is the primary provider of health services for the community and four other neighboring villages. Because of its high frequency and relatively central location CSCOM and Maternity’s need for improvement of the building’s electrification must be met if it is to continue to service as many people as it does from such a wide area. Although, a lack of education is a problem among people, and women in particular this far in the bush, CSCOM and maternity sees a large number of people coming every day for check ups, vaccinations, baby weighings and other preventative and health related programs is proof that the people of Galle and the surrounding villages see these services as important and necessary.

Early on in my service the President of the CSCOM and I discussed the need for an efficient source of lighting in the building. There are already solar panels and 23 lighting outlets. However, the first time the wiring was put in it was done incorrectly and now does not currently work. It is currently very difficult to treat patients and assisting mothers in labor by flashlight or oil lantern. My request is to have the building rewired and to have someone in Galle trained so they can maintain the system, make small repairs on the system and know when the repairs are beyond their capability so that they will bring in a technician to handle the repairs
