Preliminary Aedes aegypti Annotation Release

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health has funded the sequencing, assembly and annotation of the Aedes aegypti genome through its Microbial Sequencing Centers: The Institute for Genomic Research and the Broad Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and VectorBase, a NIAID Bioinformatics Resource Center.

Annotation Release -- December 22, 2005

A preliminary computational annotation (0.5) of the Aedes aegypti assembly is now available in PreEnsembl, http://pre.ensembl.org/Aedes_aegypti/index.html.

The computational annotation of the Aedes genome is a collaboration between TIGR and VectorBase. Each group has generated a set of gene predictions (0.5) available for download at ftp://ftp.ensembl.org/pub/pre/aedes_aegypti/. A more complete annotation, including functional assignments and gene accessions that will be tracked forward, will be released in Genbank and VectorBase in late spring of 2006. Subsequent annotation updates will be the responsibility of VectorBase.

Aedes aegypti Assemblies

Two sequence assemblies of the Aedes genome have been released: a 5 fold (AAGE01000000) and 7.6 fold (AAGE02000000).

7.6 Fold Assembly Statistics

Total number of sequence reads: 14.9 million
Total number of sequence reads placed in the assembly: 12.3 million
Average contig coverage: 7.6X (6.71X in Q20 bases)
Number of contigs: 36,206
Total length of combined contigs 1.31 Gb
Number of scaffolds: 4,758
Total length of combined scaffolds (including gaps) 1.383 Gb

Supplementary Data Release

Complementary to the sequencing and annotation project described above, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health has also funded a project to provide additional Aedes aegypti genome related resources. As part of this project The Institute of Genomic Research has released in Genbank 207,079 Aedes aegypti EST sequences and 117,937 BAC end sequences generated from a variety of libraries. The EST accession ranges to date are: DV230611-DV235882, DV235883-DV270715, DV300289-DV348598, DV348687-DV389983, DV389984 and DV437762. The BAC end sequence accession ranges are: CC065891-CC144307, CC149837-CC155974 and CC841856-CC875159.

Additional information about the Aedes aegypti sequencing project and assembly can be found at the Broad Institute http://www.broad.mit.edu/annotation/disease_vector/aedes_aegypti/ and at TIGR http://www.tigr.org/msc/aedes/aedes.shtml.
