Animal Models for the Evaluation of Experimental Therapies and Vaccines

Prioritization and Approval Process

Requests for animal model testing are prioritized and approved by the Project Officer and staff from the NIAID Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, based on the following review criteria:

  • The likelihood that services will contribute significantly to the eventual development and/or evaluation of a product of high priority.
  • Public health impact within the scope of the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases’ responsibilities.
  • Innovation; i.e., the aspects of the product that will achieve what current control measures are not able to, that will improve the capability of existing control measures or that will result in a product that is as useful or better than existing control measures.
  • Previous use of DMID resources for assessment of the same or similar product. Repeat use of DMID resources may be undertaken with strong justification.
  • Need for this support beyond availability of support from other sources.
  • Competing priorities/availability of contract resources.
