Preliminary Steel Imports: First Monthly Increase in 2009, Up 14% in July
08/25/2009- Washington, D.C. – Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 985,000 net tons (NT) of steel in July 2009, including 884,000 NT of finished steel (up 14% and 9%, respectively, vs. June final data).
AISI statement on August 18 WTO Appellate Body ruling against zeroing
08/25/2009- The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) joins the United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) office in condemning the August 18 ruling by the WTO against zeroing, a U.S. method of calculating antidumping duties.
June Steel Shipments Up 12.1 Percent From May
08/19/2009- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that for the month of June 2009, U.S. steel mills shipped 4,797,000 net tons, a 12.1 percent increase from the 4,282,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, May 2009 and a 47.5 percent decrease from the 9,136,000 net tons shipped in June 2008.
Steel Industry Executives Achieve LEED AP Accreditation
08/11/2009- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced today that Dr. Helen Chen, P.E., Manager of Construction Standards Development; and Jonathan Humble, AIA, Regional Director-Construction Codes and Standards, have achieved LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional) accreditation in the specialty of Building Design + Construction.
American Iron and Steel Insitute Thanks Senators for Support of Border Measure in Climate Bill
08/06/2009- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) issued a statement today expressing strong support and appreciation to Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and nine of his Senate colleagues for issuing a letter to President Obama expressing their strong support for the inclusion of a border adjustment measure in any climate bill that is crafted by Congress.
Steel Imports Rise 5 Percent First Monthly Increase in 2009
08/05/2009- Washington, D.C. - Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that steel import permit applications for the month of July totaled 951,000 net tons (NT).
AISI Publishes Design Guide For Cold-Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems
08/04/2009- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced today the publication of the 2009 edition of the Design Guide for Cold-Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems. The Design Guide is based on AISI S100-07, the 2007 edition of the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. It is available for purchase online at www.steel.org.
Automotive Materials Life Cycle Assessment Model Released for Use
08/04/2009- Automakers can now more comprehensively evaluate material selection decisions and their effect on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with additional options for materials, emerging powertrains and fuel sources.

08/24/2009- The nation's factory output is growing for the first time since early last year, bolstering the case for an economic recovery. While the improvement is modest amid weak consumer spending, some leading manufacturers and economists believe it can be sustained and eventually set off a more robust upswing.

Global Crude Steel Output Highest For 2009 In July
08/21/2009- Global crude steel production in July reached its highest monthly level so far in 2009 as producers brought back idled capacity to meet improved demand, but output was down 11.1 percent from the same month last year.
Furnace Restarts Signal US Steel Industry Rebound
08/21/2009- Steelmaker ArcelorMittal said on Thursday it will restart two idled blast furnaces in the United States, while a union official said a U.S. Steel Corp furnace is also being prepared to reopen as the industry slowly rebounds from recession.
