What to Expect in Afghanistan

Clothing

You will need to bring clothing for hot summers and cold winters. During the winter months, local government officials and other contacts generally wear coat and tie. In the summer, walking suits or short sleeve shirts and trousers are worn, but dress in Kabul and at the Embassy is relatively formal year-round. Staff should be aware of local customs and mores regarding clothing and dress appropriately.

Food

There are currently two cafeterias, one on each side of the compound, managed by a private company. As they are geared to serve many customers in an efficient manner, the portions are large and variety can be often limited.

Health and Medical

The Embassy contains a Health Unit, typically staffed by Foreign Service Health Practitioners, as well as local staff. An international military hospital in Kabul is available for emergency cases, as is the U.S. Army Hospital at Bagram Air Base, 25 miles from Kabul. The Regional Medical Officer located in Islamabad and the Regional Psychiatrist in New Delhi makes regular visits to Kabul.

Housing

There are two types of housing in Kabul: one-bedroom apartments and converted shipping containers known as "hooches".
