ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY: Arlington, Virginia. Open daily October-March from 8am-5pm and April-September from 8am-7pm. Highlights of the Cemetery include Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Custis-Lee Mansion (Arlington House), the graves of Presidents John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft, and the Challenger Memorial. Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier occurs every hour on the hour during winter months; every half-hour during the summer months. 703.607.8000. NATIONAL ZOO: 3000 Connecticut Ave., NW. Several thousand animals, including the treasured giant pandas, in a beautiful 163-acre park. May 1-September 15, grounds open daily 6am-8pm and buildings open from 10am-6pm. September 16-April 30, the grounds are open daily from 6am-6pm, and the buildings are open from 10am-4:30pm. OCTAGON HOUSE: 18th St. and New York Ave., NW. Architectural exhibits. Served as President James Madison’s White House following the destruction of the original White House by the British in 1814. The Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 was signed here. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-4pm. Tours are given every hour and every half hour. Closed Mondays. PENTAGON: Located in Virginia across the 14th St. Bridge. Open Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm. Closed on federal holidays and weekends. All visitors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors over 16 must show a valid photo ID. Tours last 1 hour 15 minutes and start every half-hour by the ticket window at the north end of the concourse, near the Metro entrance. The ticket window opens at 8:45am. Reservations are required for all groups and must be made at least one month in advance. 703.695.1776. Metro Stop: Pentagon.

UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM:  100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW (South of the Mall by the Washington Monument). Open daily 10am-5:30pm. Closed Yom Kippur and December 25. Only the permanent exhibition requires a timed entry pass. Passes are free and daily distribution begins at 10am at the pass desk. Advance passes are available through Ticketmaster (for a small handling fee) at 1.800.400.9373 or www.tickets.com. UNITED STATES NAVAL OBSERVATORY: 34th St. & Massachusetts Ave, NW. A tour of the grounds and the observational equipment is given on Monday evenings, except federal holidays. The gate opens at 8pm. You should consider arriving by 7:30pm to ensure entry as space is limited. The tour begins at 8:30pm lasting approximately 90 minutes.  You will not be permitted to leave the group at any time nor will you be allowed to leave the tour before its completion. This is the location of the home of the Vice President. 202.762.1467.

VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL: Near the Lincoln Memorial at Henry Bacon Drive and Constitution Avenue, NW. Always open. Constructed of black granite to honor all Americans who served in the Vietnam War. As a special tribute to those who did not return, the names of more than 58,000 who gave their lives or who remain missing are inscribed in the Memorial’s walls. WASHINGTON MONUMENT: On the Mall at 15th St., NW. Open daily April-Labor Day from 8am-midnight and September-March from 9am-5pm. Tickets required 8am-8pm April-Labor Day and 9am-3pm after Labor Day-March. Tickets available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the booth next to the monument beginning at 8:30am (7:30am during the summer). Free admission. 202.426.6841. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.
