CCS:
Institutes
The CCS Institutes are an outreach activity,
providing an intellectual home and computational infrastructure for
community building. The Institutes share a number of common goals:
- Extended simulations in areas of importance to DOE
- Repositories of community codes optimized for
high end computing
- A testbed for evaluations of new computer hardware
and application of innovative software engineering techniques
- Pushing hardware beyond original vendor design specifications to achieve science missions
- Workshops to enhance researcher skills and
train the next generation of modelers
- Increased interactions between research scientists and
computer scientists and mathematicians
- Collaborations
to interpret and improve simulation results and to strengthen links
between predictive modeling and experimental research

- Computational Biology Institute
Mission: To develop and provide innovative computational biology and computing
methods, algorithms, systsems and infrastructure that will broaden
scientific understanding of the molecular interactions that are the basis
of microbial and metazoan systems.
- Climate and Carbon Research Institute
Mission: To advance computational climate science toward understanding
how the Earth's climate responds to physical, chemical, and biological changes
produced by global alterations of the atmosphere, ocean, and land.
- Fusion Simulation Institute
Mission: To provide a focus for collaborations between researchers
developing the fundamental plasma theory and computational base needed to
understand and predict plasma behavior in fusion devices.
- Materials Research Institute
Mission: To build and maintain a community of leading computational
materials scientists conducting research aligned with priorities of the
Computational Materials Science Network (CMSN) and the Center for Nanophase
Materials Sciences (CNMS) and to integrate the community into the development
and application of the high performance computing infrastructure of the CCS.
- Computational Center for Industrial Innovation
Mission: To provide support and assistance to U.S. industry to smooth its path into high-performance computing. ORNL-industry collaborations will address challenging, industrially relevant problems--problems that have previously eluded solution because of insufficient computational power or inadequate software availability.
