Science and Energy Research Challenge
2008 Competition
The first annual Science and Energy Research Challenge (SERCh), sponsored
by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science, was held on November
9-10, 2008, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Eighty-five undergraduate
students, twelve of whom completed a 2008 summer internship at BNL, were
selected to participate in this prestigious and highly competitive National
poster competition.
As part of the application process, students were required to submit a
research abstract and poster. Each competitor was judged twice in one of
five categories: Biological Science, Chemistry, Materials Science and
Engineering, Environmental Science, and Physics.
Elizabeth Millings (pictured at right), a 2008 BNL summer intern, received second place in
Chemistry for her project titled "Fluoroquinone for Peptide and Protein
Labeling."
While the poster competition was the main focus of the SERCh,
participants also had the opportunity to speak with prominent scientists,
attend seminars and workshops, and meet other like-minded students and
faculty.
