Location   East Plaza and east grounds of Capitol; north lawn of Capitol; area adjacent to New Jersey Avenue NW across Constitution Avenue from Capitol's North Extension; temporary visitor screening center on south side of Capitol; related utility work on Capitol Square.
Description  

Three-story underground construction project under East Plaza and grounds of Capitol with vehicle access tunnel underneath Constitution Avenue; improvement of East Plaza and completion of Capitol Square Perimeter Security Project to coincide with completion of CVC project. Perimeter Improvement Projects

Perimeter Improvement Projects

Location   Capitol Square, Senate Office Buildings, House Office Buildings, Library of Congress Buildings.
Description   Replace unaesthetic temporary security features with architecturally appropriate permanent fixtures, including steel bollards, stone and concrete planters, security kiosks, hydraulic vehicular barriers, and lift gates.

U.S. Supreme Court Modernization Project

U.S. Supreme Court Modernization Project

Location   First Street, N.E. between East Capitol Street and Maryland Avenue
Description  

In July 2003, the AOC embarked on a multi-year Supreme Court modernization project with two main goals—to replace virtually all of the original systems, including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC and to build an annex that will house building functions displaced by increased space requirements of mechanical systems. The renovation work on the Supreme Court Building is being completed in two phases. The first phase of the project included the construction of the two-story underground annex on the Maryland Avenue side of the building, which began in 2003. The second phase includes upgrading and replacing the building systems, in addition to interior work on the underground annex. This work began in spring 2004. The general contractor forecasts completion of the modernization project in fall 2010.

Phase I is complete. Phase II began in Summer 2004 with projected completion in 2010.

Public Impacts  

Maryland Avenue is closed to pedestrians from the staircase near the northwest corner of the building continuing east to Second Street. Maryland Avenue is also closed to eastbound vehicular traffic. The sidewalk along East Capitol Street adjacent to the Court is closed to pedestrians.

 

West Refrigeration Plant Expansion

West Refrigeration Plant Expansion

Location   U. S. Capitol Power Plant
Description  

The expansion of the West Refrigeration Plant by 80,000 square feet will enable the Capitol Power Plant to reliably meet cooling requirements of the U.S. Capitol complex through 2025 and will significantly increase overall plant efficiency. The U.S. Capitol Power Plant supplies steam to heat and chilled water to cool 18 facilities in the Capitol complex including the House and Senate Office buildings, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress.

Description   A water-line relocation project is being done in conjunction with a Perimeter Security project that involves the installation of a pop-up vehicle barrier at the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Second Street, N.E.
