After six days of torrential rain, the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States got a break on June 29, 2006. Skies were mostly clear when the MODIS on the Terra satellite captured this image at noon Eastern Daylight Time. The image shows the region around Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, including the northern half of the Chesapeake Bay. The cities are cement grey, blending with the murky color of the water flowing through the Potomac and Susquehanna Rivers and into the bay. The rivers are a muddy brown after swollen creeks and run-off swept sediment into their waters. Red boxes outline the three fires MODIS detected in the region.
