Air District Fact

The Community Air Risk Evaluation (CARE) program was initiated in 2004 to evaluate and reduce health risks associated with exposures to outdoor toxic air contaminants (TACs) in the Bay Area. The program examines TAC emissions from point sources, area sources and on-road and off-road mobile sources with an emphasis on diesel exhaust, which is a major contributor to airborne health risk in California.

Lower Emission School Bus Program

The Lower-Emission School Bus Program (LESBP) is a partnership between the California Air Resources Board (ARB) and local air districts, and is administered locally by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District). The goals of the LESBP are to reduce the exposure of school children to harmful emissions of particulate matter (PM) and reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), which contribute to summertime smog.

This grant program provides funding to:

  1. replace pre-1987 school buses with clean school buses: open to Bay Area public school districts that own and operate school buses, including under the provisions of a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA).
  2. retrofit 1987 and newer in-use diesel school buses with emission control devices: open to Bay Area public school districts that own and operate school buses, including under the provisions of a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA), and school transportation companies that provide transportation services under contract to Bay Area public schools.

The Air District is not currently accepting grant applications.
