Work Experience of the Population

Each March, as part of the Annual Demographic Survey, questions are asked on work experience during the previous calendar year. A total of 137.6 million persons held jobs during all or part of 1994. This was an increase of 2.1 million from 1993. At the same time, the number of persons experiencing some unemployment during the year fell to 18.9 million. Because the supplement reference period is a full year, the number of persons with some employment or unemployment greatly exceeds the average levels released each month, which are based on a 1-week reference period.

Information on the data collection and estimation methods for the March supplement are Internet accessible. Person-level microdata containing detailed information on the work experience in 1994 of persons interviewed in March, 1995 can also be down-loaded and tabulated on-line via FERRET.
