The Climate & Carbon Research Institute (CCRI)

The CCRI focuses on the computational aspects of how the global climate and carbon systems interact with natural and anthropogenic processes.

Mission: To advance computational climate science toward understanding how the Earth's climate responds to physical, chemical, and biological changes produced by global alterations of the atmosphere, ocean, and land.

Early Accomplishments of CCRI

  • Workshop at NCAR on porting the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) to the Cray X1 (2/6/03)
  • Workshop at Breckenridge on Vectorization of the CCSM (6/26/03)
  • ORNL/CCS supporting Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment simulations. [A significant portion of the IPC runs (1100 simulated years) will be calculated at CCS using CCSM2 in a high resolution atmospheric configuration.]
  • Designated primary computation center for SciDAC climate
