ATSDR Sets August 14 Deadline to Sign up for JAK2 Testing
Monday, August 10, 2009
(Carbon, Luzerne, and Schuylkil, Pennsylvania) - Due to the greater than expected response to the offer of testing, the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will schedule appointments for a second round of JAK2 screening through Friday, August 14, 2009. ATSDR scheduled this second round of testing, to take place in the fall, after all of the available appointments in August had been filled. Residents of Carbon, Luzerne, and Schuylkill Counties should call 1-877-525-4860 by Friday to schedule a fall appointment for a JAK2 screening.

Village residents asked for the health consultation to find out whether eating Alaska Native traditional foods could harm people's health.

ATSDR releases final report on Lusher Avenue Groundwater Contamination

(Elkhart, Indiana) - About 200 people were exposed to chemicals in drinking water wells near Lusher Avenue in Elkhart, IN, in the late 1980s, including an estimated 53 who were exposed to levels that may put them at greater risk for adverse health effects, concludes the final public health assessment (PHA) on the site from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

ATSDR to Review Environmental Health Issues in Midlothian

(Midlothian, Texas) - Environmental health professionals will be interviewing residents of Midlothian, TX from July 13-18 to learn how people get their information, to gather community health concerns and to obtain input into the Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) public health response plan. Community members will be able to provide input to professionals from ATSDR and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), as they revisit Midlothian environmental health issues.

ATSDR Health Consultation Released on Marietta Area Air Investigation; EPA-Funded Health Study Initiated
Friday, July 03, 2009
(Washington County, Ohio) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) will fund a local health study to evaluate potential health effects from exposure to manganese. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has recommended this next step after completing a year-long air investigation in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Representatives from ATSDR and EPA will be in the Marietta area in early July to discuss the findings of the air investigation and the plans for the new study.

Public Comments Sought on Public Health Assessment for Flat Creek IMM site, Comments Accepted through August 14, 2009

(Mineral County County, Superior, Montana) - Frequent contact with waste tailings on the Iron Mountain Mine and Mill (IMM) site, the Flat Creek floodplain, and the town of Superior could harm people�s health, says a federal health assessment. Levels of arsenic and lead are of public health concern if residents, particularly children, repeatedly contact areas affected by waste tailings in and around Superior, MT.

Federal Agency Says Well Water near Homestake Mining Company Mill Site Poses No Apparent Public Health Hazard

ATSDR Seeks Public Comments on Public Health Assessment for the Midnite Mine site

(Stevens County, Wellpinit, Washington) - People who visit the Midnite Mine should limit their time there to reduce the chances of being exposed to contaminants, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). ATSDR is seeking public comments on its draft public health assessment. Comments on the report are being accepted through July 20, 2009.

Illinois Beach State Park Asbestos Levels Not Expected to Harm Public Health

(Zion, Illinois) - Recreational use of Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park (IBSP) is not expected to harm people's health, says the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Both ATSDR and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources continue to conduct regular beach sweeps and advise the public of the presence of asbestos-containing material. If asbestos-containing materials are found, IBSP visitors should report them to beach staff and should not attempt to remove the material or otherwise disturb it.

Public Comment Sought for the Lusher Avenue Groundwater Contamination ATSDR Assessment

(Elkhart, Indiana) - Two decades after contamination was first found in Elkhart groundwater, federal officials continue to advise people who live in affected areas and use private wells to take precautions. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) released its public health assessment of the site March 2 and is welcoming public comment on the assessment until March 31.

Public Comment Sought for the Intel, New Mexico ATSDR Health Consultation

(Sandoval County, Rio Rancho, New Mexico) - The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) concludes that for most of the chemicals measured in the outdoor air, the available air monitoring data are not adequate to evaluate fully the potential public health consequences of the Intel-New-Mexico air emissions. ATSDR recommends several public health actions including exploring the possibility of conducting additional sampling and monitoring to characterize residential exposures, physician health education, and reduction of air emissions where feasible. ATSDR is issuing the health consultation for public comment on February 2, 2009. Public comments will be accepted through April 3, 2009.

ATSDR Invites Public to Comment on Draft Public Health Assessment for Hidden Lane Landfill Site, Sterling, VA

(Loudoun County, Sterling, Virginia) - The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has completed a draft public health assessment (PHA) evaluating the public health impact of chemicals released from the Hidden Lane Landfill site near Sterling, Virginia. Former operations of this closed landfill resulted in contamination of private wells in the area with volatile organic compounds such as trichloroethylene.
