AGREEMENT ESTABLISHING AN ALLIANCE
BETWEEN
THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR
AND
THE INTERNATIONAL MASS RETAIL ASSOCIATION

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and International Mass Retail Association (IMRA) have long recognized the value of fostering safer and more healthful American workplaces. OSHA and IMRA therefore agree to form an Alliance to use their collective expertise to help foster a culture of prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge, including the area of ergonomics.

OSHA and IMRA agree to establish an Alliance to promote safe and healthful working conditions for retail employees by:
  • Providing IMRA members with information and guidance to help them protect employees’ health and safety.

  • Reaching out to IMRA members who will benefit from mentoring or guidance in developing, implementing, or improving safety and health programs, including ergonomic programs.
OSHA and IMRA will work together to achieve the following outreach and communication goals:
  • Develop and disseminate information at conferences, events, or through print and electronic media, including links from OSHA’s and IMRA’s web sites.

  • Speak, exhibit, or appear at conferences, local meetings, or other events to promote the effectiveness of safety, health and ergonomic programs.

  • Promote training and education programs on safety, health and ergonomic issues.
OSHA and IMRA will work together to achieve the following goals related to promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • Encourage IMRA members to act as industry liaisons and resources for OSHA’s cooperative programs and Compliance Assistance Specialists.

  • Share information on safety, health and ergonomics programs of IMRA members with others in the industry through outreach by IMRA.

  • Convene or participate in forums and round table discussions on ergonomic issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace.
An implementation team made up of representatives of both organizations will meet to develop a plan of action, determine working procedures, and identify the roles and responsibilities of the participants. In addition, they will meet on a regular quarterly schedule to track, analyze and share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the Alliance. OSHA will encourage State Plan States’ and OSHA Consultation Projects’ participation on the team.

The information provided by IMRA and/or its members is for the purpose of contributing to informed decision-making by the Agency and any other recipients of this information. Information provided by IMRA does not constitute an official statement or position by IMRA and is not intended by the parties to create any legal obligations for IMRA or its individual members. IMRA is not a standard setting organization and information provided pursuant to this Alliance Agreement is not intended as a legally binding standard or guideline.

This agreement will remain in effect for one year from the date of signing and will automatically be renewed annually thereafter. This agreement may be modified at any time with the concurrence of both signatories and may be terminated for any reason with 30 days written notice from either signatory.
