ARC Launches “Gems of Appalachia” Grant Competition
ARC has issued a request for proposals for its “Gems of Appalachia” grant competition, which aims to promote sustainable tourism in “gateway” communities in Tennessee and Kentucky adjacent to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Nonprofit organizations, local governments, public education institutions, and local and regional development organizations located in Tennessee’s Scott, Fentress, Pickett, and Morgan Counties, and in Kentucky’s McCreary, Wayne, and Whitley Counties, are eligible to apply for the grants. The deadline for submission of proposals is August 28, 2009.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Senate, House Approve Increased Funding for ARC’s FY 2010 Programs
On July 29, 2009, the Senate approved its FY 2010 energy and water development appropriations bill (S.1436), which provides $76 million for ARC’s nonhighway programs. This is an increase of $1 million from ARC’s FY 2009 funding level. It is also the amount provided in the House of Representatives’ FY 2010 energy and water development appropriations bill (H.R.3183), passed on July 17. There are no ARC earmarks in either bill. The House and Senate will now work to resolve differences between the bills.
