Efforts by Republicans to Rebrand Conference will not Change the Facts
05/12/2008
According to news reports today, House Republicans are planning to unveil a new message this week. New phrases and an effort to rebrand the Republican Conference will not change the fact that the majority of House Republicans support President Bush’s policies and are against solutions which would take America in a New Direction.
REPUBLICANS STAND WITH PRESIDENT BUSH ON ENERGY
- Voted against ending taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil companies and invest in renewable energy. In February, the House passed the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Act to end unnecessary subsidies to Big Oil companies and invest in clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency. 174 Republicans voted against this critical legislation to make America more energy independent. President Bush has threatened to veto the bill. [H.R. 5351, 2/27/08 – Vote #84]
REPUBLICANS STAND WITH PRESIDENT BUSH ON THE ECONOMY
- Voted against a comprehensive response to the American mortgage crisis. On May 8th, the House passed a package of housing measures to help families facing foreclosure keep their homes, help other families avoid foreclosures in the future, and help the recovery of communities harmed by empty homes caught in the foreclosure process. Despite bipartisan work to craft this legislation, 154 Republicans voted against the FHA Housing Stabilization and Homeownership Retention Act and President Bush has threatened to veto the bill. [H.R. 3221, 5/8/08, Vote #301]
REPUBLICANS STAND WITH PRESIDENT BUSH ON SECURITY
- Voted against legislation to strengthen our nation’s military readiness and national security, beginning with a responsible, strategic redeployment of our troops from Iraq. In April 2007, the House passed the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans’ Health and Iraq Accountability Act to fully fund our troops, provide for veterans’ health care and strengthen our military, beginning with the responsible redeployment of our troops from Iraq. Republicans voted against the measure and the President vetoed the bill. In May, 196 Republicans stood with the President and upheld the veto. Over the course of the year, the House voted a number of times on similar legislation calling for a responsible redeployment of our troops from Iraq – each time the majority of Republicans voted ‘No.’ [H.R. 1591, 4/25/07 – Vote #265; 5/2/07 – Vote #276; H.R. 2956, 7/12/07 – Vote #624; H.R. 4156, 11/14/07 – Vote #1108]
REPUBLICANS STAND WITH PRESIDENT BUSH ON HEALTH CARE
- Supported the President’s Veto Denying Health Insurance for 10 Million American Children: In 2007, the House and Senate twice passed legislation to provide health insurance for 10 million children through the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). President Bush vetoed both bills. When it came time to override each Bush veto, House Republicans stood with the President and prevented millions of children from receiving health insurance. [H.R. 976, 9/25/07 – Vote #906, 10/18/07 – Vote #982; H.R. 3963, 10/25/07 – Vote #1009, 1/23/08 – Vote #22]
- Voted Against Life-Saving Stem Cell Research: In June 2007, House Democrats passed legislation to increase the number of lines of stem cells eligible to be used in federally-funded, life-saving research. 160 Republicans ignored the will of the American people and leading medical researchers and voted against the bill. President Bush later vetoed the measure. [H.R. 3/S. 5, 6/7/07 – Vote #443]
