Richmond BizSense (Virginia) - So far stimulus saves 160 jobs
The U.S. Recovery Act has saved or created 160 jobs in Richmond so far…
…For example, here is a description for a project in Church Hill to develop affordable housing, for which the city received $500,000 to fund infrastructure improvements: Temporary jobs will be created/sustained in the construction industry during the build out, as well as in the engineering and architecture trades that work on the development…
… Permanent jobs will be created in property management and maintenance as well as the essential services needed for a multifamily development, such as landscaping, janitorial functions, trash collection, and a host of other building service functions.
Community development grants totaling more than $1.3 million are estimated to save or create a total of 106 jobs, mostly in the construction field.
The city also received $6.2 million from Environmental Protection Agency for sewer improvements, funding a total of three projects. Combined they will require 44 full and part time construction workers for 10 to 12 months. The projects will provide additional short-term jobs to quarry truck drivers, steel manufacturers, and concrete suppliers. [Read More]

Bluefield Daily Telegraph (West Virginia) - Across W.Va.: Stimulus dollars improving schools, creating jobs
The state School Building Authority will be closing Wednesday on $30 million in school construction bonds that will be used to make repairs, replacements and additions to 38 schools in 30 counties through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, state SBA Director Dr. Mark Manchin said.
“What this does is it creates jobs,” Manchin, a former school superintendent for McDowell County, said. “It is going to require roofing companies across the state to hire people to put these roofs on. But the real benefits will be to the children in the county school systems. All of that comes out of the federal stimulus legislation, which allows us to sell these bonds to give tax credits. We are the first state in the union to actually utilize these bonds. We are ready to go.” [Read More]
The Telegram and Gazette (Massachusetts) - US gives $12M to wire projects
Energy technologies company American Superconductor Corp. will receive more than $12 million in federal stimulus funding to complete two ongoing smart grid projects using the company’s superconductor wire.
American Superconductor’s second-generation wire, called 2G, or 344 superconductor, is able to carry 150 times the electrical power of traditional copper wire....
“This kind of funding is so important in building it and showing its potential to work,” said U.S. Rep. Nicola S. “Niki” Tsongas, D-Lowell, in whose district American Superconductor is situated… “One of the things the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is trying to do is not just jump-starting the economy, but helping create a road to the future. Northern Arizona Today (Arizona) - Flagstaff Mountain Line Receives $1.2 Million in Recovery Act Funds
Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick announced today that the Federal Transit Administration will be making $1,227,303 available to improve public transportation options in the Flagstaff area.
“A modern, cost-effective public transportation system can greatly benefit our local economies,” said Rep. Kirkpatrick. “This Recovery Act investment in our community will help create jobs on the new bus lines and make Flagstaff a more attractive place for businesses to set up shop.” [Read More]
The News-Review (Oregon) - Editorial: Stimulus funds rain down, help prepare for seasons
Among the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds the county has received…is the $1.8 million the United Community Action Network has been awarded to weatherize the homes of lower-income families in Douglas and Josephine counties.
Chris Shoopman, a UCAN program manager, said after the award was announced last week that the agency normally weatherizes 50 homes a year in Douglas County. The new money will mean close to 300 homes can be improved annually during the next three years.
The program not only saves energy, it employs local contractors. And at its heart, the federal stimulus program is all about creating jobs and some positive movement in the nation's economy.

Communities in five Western North Carolina counties will get $12 million in federal stimulus money for water and sewer projects, officials said Monday.
The money in Asheville will mean an end to higher rates and headaches for people living in Reynolds Mobile Home Park and Viewmont Acres Mobile Home Park.
Mobile Home Park resident Linda Baker said her water bills have gone up by about $12 each month over the past year as water system problems have gotten worse.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer (Washington) - Baird announces $6.2M for Mount St. Helens
U.S. Rep. Brian Baird says $6.2 million in stimulus dollars will be coming to southwest Washington, mostly to pay for upgrades at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
Baird says the money will create jobs but also upgrade facilities for the thousands of tourists and scientists who visit the monument and surround recreational areas each year. [Read More]

The grants are especially intended to help people without jobs.
