The Chemistry and Material Sciences Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (ChemMatCARS), University of Chicago, invites applications for a post-doctoral scholar position with the University of Chicago Center for Advanced Radiation Sources (CARS) to study the formation, structure and elastic response of thin films of nanoparticles at oil/water interfaces. This experimental program will utilize the ChemMatCARS liquid interface x-ray scattering facility at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The successful applicant will also participate in the development of a general user program at ChemMatCARS in the field of liquid/liquid interface scattering. Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. with significant experience in experimental research in condensed matter physics or physical chemistry. Prior experience with synchrotron x-ray surface scattering is preferred, but experimental ability and initiative are equally important. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with others are required. Ability to satisfy requirements to work at Argonne National Laboratory is required.

The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable for one or two additional years. Review of applications will begin on September 1, 2009, and continue until the position is filled. PROGRAM MANAGER

The US Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences(BES), Division of Materials Science and Engineering(DMS&E), has an opening for a program manager in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics. The Program Manager has the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in the field on a national and international level. The responsibilities include determining scientific focus and direction of the research programs in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics, preparing calls for proposals, organizing independent peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, organizing Principal Investigator meetings, serving as a Liaison on committees, and monitoring scientific progress of the program. The Program Manager will examine and ascertain pioneering research needs and opportunities of the research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of the Department of Energy. The Program Manager will justify, and support the portions of the budget relating to experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics, critically evaluate contractor, DOE laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance via own scientific and technical judgment, merit review, site visits and reviews and panel reviews. The Program Manager will develop and prepare analytical documents to communicate with top management of DOE and higher echelons of government on the status of programmatic phases and new developments and opportunities in a broad range of experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics. The Program Manager will direct a program that conducts basic research in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics including the publication of research findings in archival peer-reviewed journals.

This position will support both the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics Program and the Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics Programs in the DMS&E.

MATERIALS SCIENTIST - X-RAY CRYSTALLOGRAPHY
GE Global Research Center, Niskayuna, NY

The Chemical and Structural Analysis Laboratory (CSAL) is involved in research into the structure and composition analysis of
materials in support of materials development programs both at GE Global Research and at GE businesses.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a member of the Chemical and Structural Analysis Lab, you will work with GE Global Research and GE business technology teams to execute research projects using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and other X-ray and Neutron methods for structure analysis of GE materials systems, including but not limited to metals, ceramics, composites, polymers.

You will:

  • Deliver phase characterization and structure analysis for a wide range of GE materials through both in-house XRD capabilityand synchrotron and neutron source methods.
  • Collaborate with national labs, develop and/or implement new X-ray or neutron based methods that accelerate material
    discoveries at GE.
  • Participate in research programs at GE Global Research that require XRD characterization expertise.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers at GE Global Research and within GE businesses and provide
    consultation, experimental results, and analysis associated with research efforts.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate degree in Material Science, Chemistry, or related Chemical and Physical Science disciplines OR Masters Degree in
    Material Science, Chemistry, or related Chemical and Physical Science disciplines with at least 5 years post-degree
    experience in X-ray analysis.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in X-ray powder diffraction and other X-ray methods such as SAXS, and XAFS.
  • Demonstrated instrumentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Must be willing to travel to Synchrotron and Neutron source facilities to perform experiments as needed.
  • Unrestricted work authorization in the U.S. is required for Masters level candidates.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Hands-on experience with Synchrotron methods is highly desirable.
  • Experience in building custom X-ray instruments and carrying out non-traditional experiments.
  • Experience with a variety of different material systems.
  • Experience in other characterization techniques such as XRF, SEM, TEM, etc.
  • Programming skills.
  • Working knowledge of statistics and chemometrics.

GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS), a national user research facility at the Advanced Photon Source (APS),
Argonne National Laboratory, near Chicago, Illinois, seeks two full-time Post Doctoral Scholars in diamond
anvil cell high pressure science. These are University of Chicago positions with the Center for Advanced
Radiation Sources (CARS).

Diamond Anvil Cell Techniques Specialist: The responsibilities of this position are primarily focused on
developing and applying high pressure diamond anvil cell techniques at GSECARS beamlines, including
operation and management of a recently installed gas loading system for diamond anvil cells with on-line
imaging and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy for in-situ pressure measurements.

High Pressure Scale Specialist: The responsibilities of this position are primarily focused on the accurate
determination of high pressure scales at high temperature in the externally heated and laser heated diamond
anvil cell using a combination of the on-line Brillouin spectroscopy and diamond anvil cell x-ray synchrotron
techniques available at GSECARS. The candidate will have close collaboration with scientists working at the
Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington.

Each successful candidate will have opportunities to carry out his/her own research projects in the field of the
high pressure, high temperature mineral physics and chemistry using the following synchrotron-based
techniques available at GSECARS: on-line laser heating in the near and far infrared range, Raman, Brillouin
and optical emission spectroscopy, high resolution micro x-ray diffraction, inelastic x-ray scattering, x-ray
emission and absorption spectroscopy. The successful candidates will be also be responsible for user support
and developing related high pressure diamond anvil cell techniques at the GSECARS beamlines.

Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Geosciences, Physics, Optics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related field
as well as experience in some or all of the following areas: diamond anvil cell techniques, laser heating, optical
spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray techniques. Ability to work well as a team member and independently is
essential; good organizational skills and good verbal and written communication skills are also required. The
ability to work well with both staff and users of GSECARS facilities in a research environment with strict safety
regulations is essential. The successful candidate must be able to meet the requirements for entry to Argonne
National Laboratory.

The preferred start date for these positions is immediate.

BEAMLINE ASSOCIATE

The High Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT) invites applications for one beamline associate position at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory, USA . HPCAT operates sector 16 at the APS, which has been developed with multiple synchrotron x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy probes dedicated for high pressure research. Currently, there are four simultaneously operational beamlines at the HPCAT, addressing scientific problems in multidisciplinary fields.

Responsibilities of the beamline associate include software development, performing and maintaining HPCAT network and control systems, as well as performing and maintaining daily and scheduled HPCAT beamline operation and participating in research teams in developing and integrating component models and controls at HPCAT.

Applicants must have a M.S. degree, or a university degree with at least three years of work experience. The successful candidate is expected to have good computer and network control skills and good skills in working in a research team environment. Good knowledge in mechanical and electric engineering is desirable. Candidates must have good verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work effectively both as a team player and independently.
